Dog Sports

There are so many activities and sports to participate in there is something for every dog/person team. Here is a list of a few with contact info to learn more. We hope to offer classes/seminars in the future to introduce folks to some of these sports.

Agility

Agility is a blast for people and dogs alike. It's fast paced and never the same so dogs and handlers must be prepared for anything. We are planning on offering agility in the Spring/Summer of 2011.
Clean Run - a terrific magazine that publishes exercises and articles monthly
Bay Team - agility club in San Francisco Bay area
Haute Dawgs - agility club in Sacramento
Herding

I used to think I loved agility, but that was before I participated in herding. Luc loved it and so did I . I'm still hoping there might be a way to have sheep at our facility..
Redwood Empire Sheepdog Association - agility club in San Francisco Bay area
Obedience

Obedience is an amazingly precise and exacting dog sport.
Associated Obedience Clubs of Northern California
Oakland Obedience Club
Rally-O

Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course of designated stations (10 - 20, depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Rally-O is meant to be the next step from CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and encourages communication between pet and owner.
RAlly You Tube Video - a terrific video to give you an idea
Northern California Dog Training Club
Haute Dawgs - agility club in Sacramento
Urban Mushing

These guys would show up at my neighborhood park in Costa Mesa on Saturday morning with neat wheeled sleds. It looked like fun and I would've joined them if I didn't already bike with my dogs.. every day. Urban Mushing looks like it might be a little safer than what I do and has the advantage of the dogs pulling you! Looks like great exercise.
Southern California Urban Mushing - Though it's called urban mushing I think it'd be more aptly named snowless mushing and would be perfect along the Haul Road or the trails at our local State Parks.
Dog Scooter
Dog Powered Scooter

And many more..

There is a sport for just about every dog including: Dock Diving, Earth dog Trials, Field Trials, Freestyle (Dancing with Dogs), Frisbee, Lure Coursing and Tracking. In addition Search and Rescue and Therapy Dog work are usually quite fun for dogs. It's just a matter of figuring out what your Atomic Dog enjoys and using it to your advantage!
